Exploring Lake Khövsgöl
As someone who prefers trips to the countryside over city tours, I decided to venture beyond Mongolia’s capital, Ulaanbaatar, to the stunning Lake Khövsgöl, often referred to as a natural gem. This journey took me from Ulaanbaatar to Mörön, and then to Hatgal, a town near the lake, where I immersed myself in the natural beauty and rich culture of the area. Here, I’ll share details of the tours I experienced, along with my thoughts and the costs involved. (Travel period: July 2-7, 2024)
Half-Day Horseback Riding Tour
One of the highlights of my trip was a half-day horseback riding tour that lasted from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. I was the only participant that day, so I had a personal experience with the guide. The tour cost $65 and included a ride up a hill, offering breathtaking panoramic views of the lake from the top. We then rode along the lakeshore, enjoying the peaceful atmosphere and stunning natural scenery. The tour also included lunch, featuring "khuushuur," a large fried dumpling or croquette-like dish.
Scenic Boat Tour to an Island
Next on my itinerary was a boat tour on Lake Khövsgöl. At the time, the rate was 60,000 MNT (about $17), and it took me to a small, picturesque island in the middle of the lake. Although uninhabited, the island has become a tourist spot with souvenir shops. The original price of the tour was 40,000 MNT, but since there were only two of us, the price was slightly higher. While the tour was convenient, I didn’t find it particularly special. However, I would recommend it to those with some extra time.
Experiencing the Reindeer Festival
I also had the chance to participate in a Reindeer Festival organized by the camp where I was staying. The cost was $70, including transportation and lunch. Although I had expected something more like a local festival, it was more of a tourist event. Nonetheless, it offered a unique opportunity to witness a shaman ceremony, see reindeer up close, and gain a deeper understanding of the local culture. Given the lack of information available to individuals and the limited transportation options, I felt the tour was worth the cost.
The Beauty of Hatgal
Hatgal is known for its pristine lake and rich wildlife, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers. I noticed many nature enthusiasts from Europe staying for extended periods, drawn by the untouched natural surroundings.
The Language Barrier
One challenge I faced was the language barrier, as English was not widely spoken. Fortunately, the owner of the accommodation where I stayed spoke fluent English, so communication there was not an issue. However, with the local people and staff, the language barrier, combined with cultural differences, led to some minor misunderstandings. While it would be ideal to speak Mongolian, my knowledge was limited to basic greetings. Since most interactions with locals are conducted in Mongolian, I felt that services offering English communication were priced accordingly.
Transportation Challenges
Transportation to and around the lake was, to put it bluntly, challenging. The airport transfer from Mörön to the camp where I stayed cost $45, and arranging transportation around Hatgal was both time-consuming and expensive. My camp host was helpful, but the services weren’t free, and the costs quickly added up. For budget travelers, it’s important to thoroughly research transportation options in advance and consider whether the destination is truly worth the effort and expense.
Conclusion
Lake Khövsgöl is an excellent place to rejuvenate in nature. The incredible landscapes alone make the journey worthwhile! However, visiting such a remote location requires both time and money. I’d recommend planning carefully, considering transportation and language barriers. Despite the challenges, the experiences of riding through the mountains, taking a boat tour on the lake, and participating in a unique cultural festival made this trip truly memorable.

なんとなくいいなーって思ってフブスグル湖へ
都市への旅ではなく田舎への旅が好きな私はモンゴルの首都ウランバートルを飛び出し、自然の宝石ともいえる美しいフブスグル湖へと旅しました。この旅はウランバートルからムルン、さらに湖の近くにあるハトガルという町へと続き、この地域の自然の美しさと文化の豊かさを堪能することができました。ここでは体験したツアーの内容と感想そして費用を書き残しておきます。（旅行時期2024年7月2日〜7日）
半日乗馬ツアー
この旅のハイライトの一つは、午前10時から午後4時までの半日乗馬ツアーでした。その日のツアー客は私だけでした。ガイドさんと一緒に乗馬しました。料金は65ドルで、ツアーでは、まず丘を登り、頂上から湖を一望できる絶景を楽しみました。その後、湖畔沿いを馬に乗って進み、静かな雰囲気と美しい自然を満喫しました。ホーショールという大きな揚げ餃子もしくはコロッケのようなランチも含まれていました。
景色の良い島へのボートツアー
次に予定していたのは、フブスグル湖でのボートツアーです。当時のレートで60,000トゥグルグ(約17ドル)で、穏やかなボートに乗って湖の中央にある小さな絵のように美しい島へと向かいました。この島は無人島ですが観光地化されていてお土産が売っていました。このツアーの料金は元々40,000トゥグルグでしたが、乗客が私ともう一人しかいなかったため、少し割高になっていました。手軽に行けるツアーです、そこまで特別とは思いませんでしたが、時間がある人にはおすすめです。
トナカイ祭りの体験
私が滞在していたキャンプが主催するトナカイ祭りに参加する機会がありました。交通費とランチを含めて70ドルでした。この祭りはもっと地元のお祭りのようなものを期待していましたが、観光客も楽しむものになっていました。シャーマンの儀式を見学し、トナカイを間近で見ることができ、地元の文化に深く触れることができました。この祭りは個人では情報を得られませんでしたし、まず交通手段がないので手配がないので、ツアーを手配してもらった価値はあったと思います。
ハトガルの美しさ
ハトガルは、澄んだ大きな湖と豊かな野生動物で知られていて、手付かずの自然を愛する人々にとっては理想的な場所です。ヨーロッパからの自然好きの人が長期滞在で集まっていました。
言語の壁
一つの課題として、英語がほとんど通じないということがありました。私が滞在していた宿のオーナーは英語が堪能だったため、コミュニケーションには問題がありませんでしたが、地元の方やスタッフの方々は英語が話せず、文化の違いもあり、滞在中にちょっとしたトラブルがありました。私たちがモンゴル語を話せば問題はありませんが、残念ながら私は挨拶ぐらいしか分かりません。観光するにあってのやりとりは基本モンゴル語で行われるため、英語での対応が可能なサービスには、その分の価値が料金に反映されていたと感じました。
交通の課題
湖やその付近への交通手段ははっきり言って良くないです。ムルン空港から私が滞在していたキャンプまでの空港送迎サービスは45ドルかかり、ハトガル周辺の移動手段を手配するのも手間と費用がかかりました。私のキャンプのホストは協力してくれましたがサービスは無料ではなく、コストが積み重なってしまうことがあります。低予算で旅行したい人は事前に交通手段をしっかりと確認してそれでも本当に行きたいかを考える余地がありそうです。
まとめ
フブスグル湖は、自然の中で心を癒す絶好の場所です。素晴らしい自然が待っているのは保証します！ただし、このような僻地を訪れるのには時間もお金もかかります。交通や言語についても考えて準備しておいた方がいいと思いました。それでも、トラブルを乗り越えて山を乗馬で巡り、湖でのボートツアーやユニークな文化祭りに参加して価値がある旅の思い出になりました。
