The Kuniumi Legend: The Birth of Awaji Island

Kuniumi (国生み) refers to the creation myth in Japanese mythology, where gods created the first lands of Japan. This legend is primarily documented in ancient texts such as the Kojiki and the Nihon Shoki.

The Legend of Kuniumi

1. Izanagi and Izanami:

   • The central deities in this myth are Izanagi (伊邪那岐) and Izanami (伊邪那美). Commanded by the gods of the heavens, they began the creation of the Japanese archipelago.

2. The Floating Bridge of Heaven (Ame-no-ukihashi):

   • Izanagi and Izanami stood on the Floating Bridge of Heaven and stirred the ocean with a jeweled spear. When they lifted the spear, the salty water that dripped from it formed the first island, which is Awaji Island.

3. The Birth of Awaji Island:

   • According to this legend, Awaji Island was the first island created in Japan. Hence, Awaji Island is often referred to as the "birthplace of Japan."
