I recently returned from a trip to Mongolia. At first, I stayed with a nomadic family and experienced their traditional ceremonies and rituals. It was a valuable experience, but it was so different from my usual lifestyle that I found myself feeling a bit exhausted from the cultural gap. So, I decided to explore environments in Ulaanbaatar that were closer to what I'm used to in my daily life.
I hope this post can be helpful for those who enjoy cultural experiences but also need a little breather now and then!

Nail Salon
First, I went to a nail salon called Sage Beauty Salon. I got both a manicure and a pedicure, and it took an incredible 4 and a half hours (lol). But I was really satisfied with the thorough service and the quality of the work. The price was also surprisingly reasonable at 110,000 tugriks (around 5,400 yen). Compared to prices in Japan, it’s a great deal. There was a bit of a language barrier, but as long as you show them a picture of the look you want, you can generally get your message across without any big issues.
Movie Theater
I went to a local movie theater nearby, but honestly, I can’t really recommend it. It was way too cold inside, and the toilets were... well, not great. If you want to enjoy a movie in Ulaanbaatar, it seems like the theater in the Shangri-La Shopping Mall is a better option. It’s new, and it has good reviews on Google Maps, so if you check it out, let me know what you think!
Shopping Mall
I visited the Shangri-La Shopping Mall. They have everything from international brands to Mongolian souvenirs. Every time I visit a shopping mall overseas, I think, “They’re all structured pretty much the same,” which makes it a stress-free shopping experience. What stood out to me the most was the grocery store in the basement. It’s just like an American Whole Foods Market! Not only the products but even the logo was nearly identical. The prices are also similarly high, but if you’re craving familiar foods or need a break from Mongolian cuisine, it’s a great place to refresh yourself.
Chinggis Khan Museum
The museum has a rich collection of exhibits and is a great place to learn about Mongolian history and culture. To be honest, I found it a bit disappointing that the exhibit descriptions were only in Mongolian. There is English guidance, but it requires scanning a QR code with your phone each time, which I found a bit inconvenient. Still, if you’re interested in Mongolia’s deep history, I’d definitely recommend it for museum lovers.

先日、モンゴル旅行から帰ってきました。最初は遊牧民の家族のところでホームステイをして、伝統的な行事や儀式を体験しました。貴重な体験でしたが、普段の生活と違いすぎて、そのギャップに疲れてしまいました。そこで、ウランバートルで普段の生活に近い環境を探して過ごしました。
異文化体験は好きだけど、ちょっと疲れた〜って人の参考になれば嬉しいです！
ネイルサロン
まず、セージビューティーサロンというネイルサロンに行きました。手と足のネイルをしてもらって、なんと4時間半もかかっちゃいました（笑）。でも、丁寧な施術とクオリティには大満足でした。値段も驚くほどお手頃で、11万トゥグルグでした（約5,400円）。日本の価格と比べるとかなりお得です。言葉の壁はありましたが、したいイメージの写真を見せればだいたい通じるので大きな問題はありませんでした。
映画館
近所の映画館に行ったんですが、正直そこはあんまりおすすめできません。館内が寒すぎるし、トイレもちょっと...。ウランバートルで映画を楽しむなら、シャングリラショッピングモール内の映画館が良さそうです。新しくて、Googleマップの評価も高いので、ぜひ感想を聞かせてくださいね！
ショッピングモール
シャングリラショッピングモールに行ってみました。世界のブランド品やモンゴルのお土産が揃っています。海外のショッピングモールに行くたびに「どこも同じ構造だな〜」と思います。だから、ストレスフリーで買い物ができると思います。その中でも特に印象的だったのが、地下1階の食料品店です。まるでアメリカのホールフーズマーケット！商品だけでなく、ロゴまでそっくりでした。価格もホールフーズと同様に高めですが、普段食べなれているものを買いたい時や、モンゴルの食事に飽きた時の気分転換にはぴったりかもしれません。
チンギスハン博物館
展示物が豊富で、モンゴルの歴史や文化を学べる良い場所です。正直な感想を言うと、展示物の説明がモンゴル語だけでちょっと惜しいなと思いました。英語の案内は毎回スマホでQRコードを読み取る形式で、少し手間に感じました。それでも、モンゴルの奥深い歴史に触れられるので、博物館が好きな人にはおすすめです。
